What Does Hot Desking Mean to You?

By now, you might well recognise that hot desking means using one of a series of desks in a shared office. You don’t use the same desk each day; rather, you pick a different one. You pick a desk, settle in, and get started – and so does everyone else using one.

But that is the meaning of hot desking. It’s rather different to ask what hot desking means to you. This is what it means to us. Would you agree?

It opens the way to easier collaboration

Even if you often work solo and you’re happy to work that way, there is no doubt that collaborating with other like-minded people can be beneficial. When you use a hot desk, you never know who you will sit next to from one day to the next. That opens the way for lots of new relationships and connections to happen. Even if you’re not actively looking for something like this, you never know when those connections could prove fruitful in the months and years to come.

It means you can introduce more variety into every working day

Are you someone who thrives on variety? Doing the exact same thing day in, day out can be draining. They say familiarity breeds contempt, and in terms of office work it can often be true.

But imagine walking into a shared office space, not knowing where you’re going to set up and work for the day. Will you choose a quiet spot near the window? Maybe you’ll choose a desk right in the heart of the room today. Wherever you end up, it makes for a different look and setting every time you head into work.

You can work in a minimalist way

Since you cannot keep belongings in your desk drawers or on the desktop each day, you need to bring in whatever you need and take it home with you. That automatically lends itself to being more prudent with your belongings. Why take in more than you need? How stripped back could you be with your work belongings each day? Adopting a minimalist stance works beautifully when hot desking. It’s one of the major benefits of working this way.
