Are you thinking about trying hot desking for the first time? Are you unsure what to expect? Maybe you’re wondering if hot desking will work for you.

It’s understandable – and human nature – to be wary of anything new. And yet some things turn out to be better than you’d hoped. Hot desking is one example of how this can work.

If you want to know how to make hot desking work, it makes sense to find out as much as you possibly can about it first. The worst thing you can do is to show up and be unsure of how it works and what is expected of you. If you don’t know you won’t be sitting at the same desk each day, it will come as a shock and you may be completely unprepared.

Learn the ropes

If you want to hire a hot desk, make sure you understand the terms and conditions of doing so. You can familiarise yourself with the process of hot desking before you do it. Even though the first day will still be strange, you’ll take to it far more easily than you otherwise would.

Ask for advice

Do you know anyone who has already tried hot desking? Some will love it, some won’t. But pick through the personal feelings and get to the information about how it works. You can use this to help you approach hot desking for the first time.

Got issues? Find solutions

You cannot plan for everything that might happen when you try this method of working for the first time. If you run into problems, don’t assume hot desking doesn’t work – or that it doesn’t work for you. Think about the problem and work out a practical solution for it. You will find most problems have solutions – you just need to figure out a way forward.

Remember too that when you are working at a hot desk, there will be others around you who are doing the same. If you need some assistance, ask. Most people will be delighted to help. They were there on their first day once too and may well have experienced some of the niggles you are going through.

The good news is learning how to make hot desking work is easier than you might think. Once you get to grips with it, you may well love it.
