Sky News open new broadcasting studio at The Gherkin in the City of London

23/02/2010

Abbey Business Centres are pleased to welcome their newest client Sky News to their 30 St Mary Axe (commonly known as ‘The Gherkin’) business centre in the City of London.

World renowned for their informative and original news broadcasting, Sky News’ Chief Business Editor Jeff Randall and his team will be presenting live from Abbey’s office space on the 15th floor of the building every weekday night giving viewers the most up to date news from all the day’s activities in the City of London – the UK’s financial powerhouse.

With panoramic views towards Westminster, St Paul’s Cathedral and Tower 42, viewers will be treated to backdrop that no other UK broadcaster can possibly match. And with the launch of the Sky News HD channel in the Spring, the audience will be brought even closer to the business stories that matter to them.

It was this stunning view, as well as the unique nature of the 30 St Mary Axe building itself, that was one of the main factors in helping Sky News to decide that this location was the perfect one for their new City of London base.

“The recession has undoubtedly been the most dominant and recurring news story of the last 18 months and it made sense for us to seek a base in the City of London to enable us to stay on the pulse of the latest crucial business stories. The very nature of The Gherkin, and the views that come with it, meant this was the only logical location for us” said Sky News Executive Editor Chris Birkett.

Julie Calder, Managing Director of Abbey Business Centres, believes this deal shows the true flexibility of the serviced office.

“Though accommodating a studio, lighting equipment and a substantial production team was more of a challenge compared to more traditional office move ins, the fact that we were even able to configure the space for Sky’s requirements just goes to show how much a serviced office can be of value to businesses – however large or small they may be. It’s great to welcome yet another strong brand into London’s most iconic building”

The first live broadcast of ‘Jeff Randall – Live’ from our space in The Gherkin went out last night at 7.30pm on Sky News (Channel 501). Jeff's inaugural guest was Conservative leader David Cameron.

Good luck to Jeff and his team for the rest of the series from everyone at Abbey Business Centres
